Hello Buncombe County!
Some stories start with a simple idea. Others start with a need that can’t be ignored. Blue Ridge Rescue Barn was created to give neglected farm animals a safe, permanent home, while helping the community see them with the same compassion we give our pets.
We were grateful to connect with Christy and hear their story and we’re excited to share her journey with you.

Tell us the story behind your business. What inspired you to start it, and how did it all begin?
I founded Blue Ridge Rescue Barn in response to a growing and deeply troubling need: the care and protection of unwanted and neglected farm animals. Time and again, I saw lives overlooked—animals treated not as sentient beings, but as commodities, valued only for their productivity. Within this utilitarian view, compassion is often lost, and their inherent worth goes unrecognized.
As a society, we open our hearts to companion animals, welcoming them into our homes as cherished members of the family. Yet farm animals, despite their capacity to feel, to suffer, and to form bonds, are rarely afforded the same empathy or protection. Instead, they are among the most vulnerable—enduring neglect, hardship, and inhumane treatment.
Blue Ridge Rescue Barn was created to stand in that gap—to offer these animals not only safety, but dignity, compassion, and a chance to be seen for who they truly are. It is a place where their lives are valued, their stories matter, and their worth is no longer defined by what they can give, but simply by the fact that they are.
Why Buncombe County? What made you choose this area to plant roots?
Western North Carolina is home, and I care deeply about making a meaningful impact within my own community. Buncombe County offers an impressive network of resources for companion animals, and I am proud to be part of a place that so clearly prioritizes their care and well-being.
At the same time, it became increasingly clear to me that other animals—particularly farm animals—do not receive the same level of attention or support. Despite the inspiring and tireless work of many dedicated rescues, these animals are still too often overlooked. Here in our region, the need for their care and protection far exceeds the resources currently available.

What’s something about your business that most people don’t know?
Something most people don’t know: we are a sanctuary model which means that when we take an animal into our care, we are making a lifetime commitment to that animal. The animals who find refuge here come from a wide range of backgrounds—most having experienced trauma, neglect, or both—and they depend on us to provide a safe, permanent home. In many cases, this involves extensive rehabilitation and ongoing medical care, which can be both complex and costly.
We rely on the generosity of donations to honor the promises we make to these animals—not just at the moment they arrive, but for every day of their lives.

What’s been your biggest challenge as a small business owner here?
Our greatest challenge as a farm sanctuary is, without question, financial sustainability. We are incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff and volunteers whose commitment to the animals in our care is unwavering. There is no shortage of compassion, effort, or expertise within our community—every day, we show up ready to provide the highest standard of care for our residents.
What we lack is not heart, but resources. Funding is both our most significant obstacle and our clearest path forward. The work we do—providing lifelong care, specialized diets, safe shelter, and often extensive medical treatment—requires consistent and substantial financial support. As I mentioned, we are committed to each animal for life, which means fundraising is necessary far beyond their intake day.
Every animal who comes to us represents a promise: safety, dignity, and a permanent home. Fulfilling that promise depends on the generosity of those who believe in this mission. With stronger financial support, we can not only sustain the level of care our current residents deserve, but also expand our ability to rescue and rehabilitate more animals in need. In many ways, funding is the bridge between what we are able to do today and what we know is possible for the future.

What’s been your most rewarding moment so far?
It is almost impossible to put into words the most rewarding part of this work. It lives in watching each of our 48 residents truly thrive—feeling safe, at ease, and surrounded by the love they have always deserved. It reveals itself in the quiet, powerful moments: when someone meets one of our residents and an instant, undeniable connection forms between human and animal. It’s there in the small, everyday gestures—the gentle nuzzle, shared naps in the warmth of the sun, or the way they call out to us as we pass by. These are the moments that remind us why this work matters
What’s next for you? Anything exciting coming up that readers should know about?
We are actively creating opportunities for our community to visit the sanctuary and connect with our residents in meaningful ways. One exciting initiative on the horizon is our “Barn Buddy” program. Those who choose to sponsor an animal as a Barn Buddy will be invited to attend weekly Buddy Days—special visits that offer time at the sanctuary and the chance to build a deeper bond with their sponsored animal. Additionally, we plan to host a fundraiser in the fall, so stay tuned for more details on that!
