Hello Buncombe County!

This week’s Tuesday Small Business Highlight shines a light on a business bringing artistry and comfort together in a fresh way. Meet Sarah Lail and Chancey Furnas, owners of Lucky Dice Nail Studio, an Asheville salon created to make self-care feel luxurious, welcoming, and genuinely enjoyable . With a focus on creativity, client relationships, and a better overall experience, they’re redefining what a nail appointment can feel like.

Tell us the story behind your business. What inspired you to start it, and how did it all begin?

Both of us become friends by working in a walk-in style salon together. Both Sarah and I shared a love of nail art and wanted to showcase our creativity. We went to nail shows and met with multiple brands, took classes, and found ourselves heavily inspired by Japanese nail art and products. The products we work with are odor free and use cosmetic grade ingredients. Our goal was to open a salon space that contributed to stopping the stigma of a nail salon experience being painful, fume-filled, or a place where you aren’t heard. Nails are meant to be a luxury service. Lucky Dice is art driven and comfort focused. We hang out, we laugh, we gossip, you can have a drink or a snack and leave feeling like the best version of yourself.Β

Why Buncombe County? What made you choose this area to plant roots?

I graduated from Warren Wilson college and initially felt very drawn to the feeling of being in a city but also able to touch grass and see gorgeous mountains every day. Sarah grew up in Weaverville and once we met it was kismet! We both saw the need for a full service private salon in Asheville and thought, why not try? We love the location and the people!

What’s something about your business that most people don’t know?

I think a lot of people underestimate the value to the relationship between a service provider and client. Think about it- it’s a standing date every 3-4 weeks for around 2 hours. We’re here for your good days and your bad days; we provide finishing touches on your wedding day but will also be there for you when you want a clean manicure and moment of relaxation before a funeral. A nail artist grows to know their client so intimately; it’s so special to be a part of everyone’s walks of life. I think a lot of people assume the beauty industry is all gossip but in reality it’s a very special connection/relationship that forms between a client and a service provider.

What’s been your biggest challenge as a small business owner here?

One of our biggest challenges has been finding our forever home. We’ve found that a lot of the commercial spaces are more advertised towards larger corporations/businesses and aren’t suitable for smaller businesses. I had always heard this complaint before becoming a business owner so it’s interesting to now understand from a new perspective. Asheville caters to tourism to a fault and tends to forget about the small businesses that make our city special. I would love to see Asheville provide affordable options for businesses (and housing) in more β€œpopular” and desirable areas rather than push out the locals to areas outside of town. We want to be a part of the heart of Asheville, too!

What’s been your most rewarding moment so far?

One month before hurricane Helene we officially expanded our studio into a second suite so that we could hire three more technicians. It was such an amazing feeling seeing our growth after 2 years pay off. While the hurricane put a stop on the grand opening, once we came back together the outpouring of love and support from old and new clients was phenomenal. Without that we wouldn’t have been able to recover from closing our doors temporarily and we’re forever grateful!

What’s next for you? Anything exciting coming up that readers should know about?

We’reΒ hoping to move to a new location soon so that way we can expand and bring more artists to the team. We also recently started a dry pedicuring program which, to my knowledge, would be one of the first in Asheville. It’s a medical-grade pedicuring style for folks who have struggled with foot care, skin fissures, and more. The focus is on repairing without pain for longer lasting results. The goal is to help all of our clients feel like the best versions of themselves and comfortable in their skin!
