Hello Buncombe County!
This week's Tuesday Small Business Highlight features a business built around the idea that small rituals can have a big impact. Meet Rustic Ritual Beauty, an Asheville salon reimagining the beauty experience through transparency, wellness, and community while creating a space where clients can truly feel cared for. From its roots in the mountains of Wyoming to its home in Buncombe County, the story behind this business is as thoughtful as the services it provides.

Tell us the story behind your business. What inspired you to start it, and how did it all begin?
My path to Rustic Ritual Beauty wasn’t a straight line — and that’s exactly what makes it interesting. My career began with Aveda, a company built on the philosophy that beauty and wellness are inseparable, which planted seeds I’d carry for years. From there, I became a yoga teacher and hiking guide, eventually leading expeditions in the Wyoming wilderness. It was in that quiet, expansive landscape that the idea began to take shape: a 2-in-1 lip and cheek tint, inspired by the idea that the smallest rituals of self-care — done with the right products and the right mindset — can genuinely change how you move through your day. The product needed a name as thoughtful as its origin, and through a series of collaborative naming workshops, Rustic Ritual Beauty emerged.

Why Buncombe County? What made you choose this area to plant roots?
Having grown up in the mountains of New York and spent years out west in Colorado and Wyoming, I was ready to return to the softer, more supple energy of the East Coast mountains — but New York winters and its limited sunlight weren’t calling me back. Asheville struck the perfect balance: the mountains I’d always loved, paired with an artistic, alternative, and outdoor-driven community that felt immediately like home.
What’s something about your business that most people don’t know?
Rustic Ritual operates on a fully transparent, gratuity-free model — and it goes deeper than just skipping the tip line. Each stylist sets their own flat rate, so clients always know exactly what they’re paying and why. The salon is also a no-aerosol, low-toxic environment, with every product carefully chosen with the health of both clients and staff in mind. It’s a different way of thinking about what a salon can be.

What’s been your biggest challenge as a small business owner here?
Without question, Hurricane Helene. The devastation was overwhelming, and there was a moment where I wasn’t sure I had it in me to start over. But when I found my current space, something shifted — I felt drawn to it immediately and couldn’t walk away. Once I made the decision to move forward, things began falling into place. Funding came through Mountain Bizworks and Operation Blessing, and the rebuild began. “It was as if the universe had my back.”

What’s been your most rewarding moment so far?
Watching my staff rebuild after Helene. Seeing them restart, grow their books, and find real success behind the chair has been the most meaningful part of the journey. For me, that’s what Rustic Ritual has always been about: the ritual of beginning again, and doing it well.

What’s next for you? Anything exciting coming up that readers should know about?
Rustic Ritual is leaning further into the community it was built for. On the horizon: pop-up yoga classes, styling workshops, community events, and art openings on the salon’s walls — because as far as I am concerned, a great salon should be more than a place you visit. A salon is a place for the community to come together

Asheville thrives because of businesses willing to do things differently, and Rustic Ritual Beauty is a great example of that spirit. Whether you're looking for a fresh style, a healthier salon experience, or simply a place to connect with others, this is one local business worth getting to know.
