Happy Monday, Buncombe County!

🗳️ Last week you told us: we asked what you would do with the extra hour when the clocks fell back, and 14 of you answered. Sleeping in led with 43%, a slow breakfast or coffee out and “lost to the kids or the dog” tied at 21% each, and a hike or walk landed at 14%. Nobody picked projects at home. Coffee out is a fine instinct, so this week starts with a coffee crawl, then a ceramics show, a root harvest and tea and poetry.

This week:

  • A week-long coffee crawl around the valley, starting Monday

  • A ceramics show at Grovewood Gallery that runs through December

  • Root harvesting at Warren Wilson’s Herb Cabin on Wednesday

  • Tea and poetry with the works of Wendell Berry in Black Mountain on Thursday

  • The rest of the week, day by day, plus what to book before the weekend

  • A fall hike finale, a Parks and Recreation chat and a Black Mountain council work session

Our full weekend picks land Thursday morning. Let’s get to it.

☕ A Coffee Crawl Around the Valley

Pick up a coffee passport, collect a stamp at each participating Chamber member coffee shop over the week, and you are a crawler. Finish it, share your coffee adventure on social media and tag the organizers for a chance to win a prize. It is a good excuse to try the shop you have been meaning to get to, and to swing by the one you already love.

📍 Where: Participating coffee shops around Black Mountain and the valley | Passports at the Black Mountain Visitor Center
📅 When: Monday, November 2nd, 8am – Sunday, November 8th, 8pm

🎨 No Rain, No Flowers at Grovewood Gallery

Ceramic artist Taylor Robenalt fills Grovewood Gallery with figurative pieces built from flowers, rain clouds, animals and female figures. The solo show is about transformation, resilience and renewal, and it stays up through the end of the year, so you can pick the day that suits you.

📍 Where: Grovewood Gallery, 111 Grovewood Rd., Asheville
📅 When: Now through Thursday, December 31st | 10am – 5pm

🌱 Root Harvesting at the Herb Cabin

Warren Wilson College hosts a weekly drop-in at its Herb Cabin where you can work with herbs and learn about them. This Wednesday’s session is root harvesting, a good one to catch if you have wondered what happens to herbs after the garden season winds down.

📍 Where: Herb Cabin, Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa
📅 When: Wednesday, November 4th | 4pm – 6pm

🫖 Tea and Poetry with Wendell Berry

White Horse Community Hub and Quietude Retreat Center pair tea and refreshments with the works of Wendell Berry for a quiet Thursday afternoon in Black Mountain. It is free, and registration is required, so sign up before you go.

📍 Where: Quietude Retreat Center, 1130 Montreat Rd., Black Mountain
📅 When: Thursday, November 5th | 1:30pm – 3:30pm
💲 Price: Free | Registration required

Around the County

Buncombe is a lot bigger than downtown, so this is where the rest of it lives.

🌳 The Fall Peaks Hiking Series wraps up Tuesday. The final hike is a moderate 2.6 miles on the Bob Benner Trail just south of Morganton, led by Black Mountain Recreation and Parks with the Foothills Conservancy of NC. Registered participants check in at the Lake Tomahawk tennis courts at 9am and can ride in the department van or drive separately. Read more

🌳 Asheville Parks and Recreation is holding Park Bench Chats. On Thursday, Nov. 5, from 11am to 2pm at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, department director D. Tyrell McGirt takes 20-minute conversations about the city’s parks, community centers and recreation. Sign up for a slot through the city page, and walk-ins may be accommodated if time permits. 🌳 Black Mountain Town Council holds an agenda work session Thursday. It starts at 5pm and is open to the public, though public comments are generally not accepted at work sessions. Read more
