Happy Monday, Buncombe County!
New this week: the Digest now lands every Monday too, with a look at the week ahead. Weekend picks still come Thursday.
🗳️ Last week you told us: we asked what actually gets you out of the house, and 119 of you answered. Live music won with 31%, markets, makers and small shops came right behind at 28%, and seven honest souls admitted they mostly stay in. This week is for all of you, including the seven: two of our picks happen sitting down.
This week:
Asheville has a crokinole club, and Tuesday is open night
A Widespread Panic film, with the filmmaker in the room
Soul at White Horse, pay what you can
A new county park, protected farmland, and Swannanoa filling back in
Let’s get to it.

🎯 Asheville Has a Crokinole Club
Every Tuesday night, the Asheville Crokinole Club takes over a corner of Highland Brewing’s taproom. Crokinole is an old dexterity board game: you flick wooden discs across a round board and try to land them in the high-scoring center. The catch is that when your opponent has a disc on the board, you have to hit it, and if you miss, your piece is out. It takes about a minute to learn, and the club says beginners are welcome, so this is the rare Tuesday plan where showing up knowing nothing is the whole point. Highland runs Music Bingo in the taproom the same evening from six to eight if your group splits.
📍 Where: Highland Brewing taproom, 12 Old Charlotte Hwy., Asheville
📅 When: Tuesday, September 29th | 6pm – 9pm, every Tuesday
🎬 A Widespread Panic Film Night
Widespread Panic turns forty this year, and on Tuesday the Grey Eagle screens The Earth Will Swallow You, the band’s only rock documentary, shot mostly in 2000 and early 2001 by Chris and Geoff Hanson. Chris Hanson will be there to talk about making it. A local Rotary Club is hosting the night, and every dollar from tickets goes to its charity work. It is a fully seated show, all ages, so it doubles as a night out for anyone who likes the music more than the standing.
📍 Where: The Grey Eagle, 185 Clingman Ave., Asheville
📅 When: Tuesday, September 29th | 6:45pm
💲 Price: Up to $20.75 | Proceeds to Rotary charities
🎶 Soul at White Horse, Pay What You Can
Once a month, White Horse Black Mountain hosts the Kat Williams Legacy Series, a soul night created in Kat’s honor to keep showcasing the artists she believed in. Thursday it is Reggie Headen, a North Carolina native whose voice sits somewhere between soul and jazz, in one of the best listening rooms in the county. White Horse is a nonprofit and runs this one pay-what-you-can, with $20 suggested, so price is not a reason to stay home.
📍 Where: White Horse Black Mountain, 105 Montreat Rd., Black Mountain
📅 When: Thursday, October 1st | 7:30pm – 9:30pm
💲 Price: Pay what you can | $20 suggested

Around the County
Buncombe is a lot bigger than downtown, so this is where the rest of it lives.
🌳 The county’s biggest park is taking shape. Buncombe County finished buying more than 342 acres on Deaverview Mountain this spring, all with grant money, and commissioners have now hired a firm to plan it. The work covers trails, parking, restrooms and the views, with construction to follow in a later phase. Read more
🌳 250 acres outside Weaverville and Leicester stay open. The same meeting approved funding to protect 80 acres of the old Camp Sequoyah property on a tributary of Reems Creek, plus four farms totaling more than 170 acres in the Leicester and Sandy Mush area. The land stays privately owned, and the farms keep farming. Read more
🌳 Swannanoa is filling back in. Around Beacon Village, new businesses have opened and the Beacon Bike Park is close to opening. Short Sleeves Coffee kept building through Helene, ran a pay-what-you-can coffee stand for about three months while the town dug out, and opened for real in May 2025. Read more
